What is agriculture insurance?
Agriculture insurance helps farmers recover from losses to crops and animals caused by natural events, pests, disease and accidents.
Weather-based plans pay out when measured weather, such as rainfall, crosses a set level, without a survey of each farm.

Agriculture insurance FAQs
Who can buy crop insurance?
Farmers, including tenant farmers and sharecroppers, can usually buy crop cover. Eligibility depends on the crop, the area and the scheme.
How is a weather-based claim decided?
Payouts use data from a reference weather station. If rainfall or temperature crosses the levels set in the policy, a payout is made.
Why does livestock need an ear tag?
The tag identifies the insured animal, so the insurer can match it to the policy at claim time.
Are premiums subsidised?
Under some government schemes, part of the premium is paid by the government. Plans outside these schemes are not subsidised.
