The basics

What is liability insurance?

Liability insurance pays compensation and legal costs if a third party holds you or your business legally responsible for injury, loss or damage.

Each policy has a limit of indemnity, the most the insurer will pay, which you choose based on your risks and contracts.

Some liability policies cover claims made during the policy period, others cover incidents that happen during it. Check your policy's basis and any retroactive date.

Liability insurance FAQs

Which liability cover does my business need?

It depends on what you do. Businesses with visitors often need public liability, manufacturers and sellers need product liability, and professionals such as doctors, architects and consultants need professional indemnity.

What is D&O insurance?

Directors and officers liability protects the personal assets of directors and senior managers if they are sued for wrongful acts in running the company.

What is a retroactive date?

The date from which past acts are covered under a claims-made policy. Renewing without a break keeps that date.

Are legal costs included?

Most liability policies pay defence costs, either within or in addition to the limit of indemnity. Check your policy schedule.

How do I choose a limit of indemnity?

Consider the size of possible claims, what your contracts ask for and any legal requirements. An advisor can help you compare options.
