Cover stops at the expiry date
A policy covers you only up to the date and time it expires. A loss the day after is not covered, even if you renew later that week.
Third-party motor cover is required by law
Using a vehicle in a public place without valid third-party insurance is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act. Keeping the policy live keeps you on the right side of it.
A lapsed motor policy usually means a fresh inspection
Once a motor policy has expired, insurers normally want the vehicle inspected before issuing a new one. That adds days, and the vehicle should not be driven until cover is back.
A health lapse can cost you the waiting-period credit
Health policies count waiting periods from the date cover starts. If the policy lapses you can lose the credit built up so far and serve those waiting periods again on a new policy.
