What is motor insurance?
Motor insurance protects you against the cost of damage to your vehicle and your legal liability to other people. A comprehensive policy combines own-damage cover for your vehicle with third-party liability cover.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, every vehicle on Indian roads needs at least third-party cover. Own-damage cover and add-ons are optional.

Motor insurance FAQs
What is the difference between comprehensive and third-party cover?
Third-party cover pays for injury, death or property damage you cause to others. Comprehensive cover adds own-damage protection for your vehicle against accidents, theft, fire and natural calamities.
What is IDV?
Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the current market value of your vehicle as agreed in the policy. It is the most the insurer pays if the vehicle is stolen or declared a total loss, and it goes down as the vehicle ages.
What is No Claim Bonus (NCB)?
A discount on your own-damage premium for every claim-free year. It belongs to you, not the vehicle, so you can take it to a new insurer.
What are add-ons?
Optional covers you can add to a comprehensive or own-damage policy for an extra premium, such as zero depreciation, engine protection or roadside assistance. Availability depends on the insurer and the vehicle's age.
What documents do I need to claim?
Usually the claim form, policy copy, registration certificate, driving licence and the repair estimate or bills. For theft and many third-party claims you also need a police FIR. Your insurer may ask for more.
Can I switch insurers at renewal?
Yes. You can move to a different insurer when your policy renews, and carry your No Claim Bonus with you if you qualify for it.
