Marine transit insurance
Cover for goods moving within India by road, rail, air or inland waterway, from a single consignment to every despatch you make in a year.
What it covers
Cover varies between insurers and plans. The policy wording is what decides whether a claim is payable, so read it before you buy.
- Accidental loss of or damage to the goods while in transit
- Overturning, derailment or collision of the carrying vehicle
- Fire and explosion during the journey
- Theft, pilferage and non-delivery, depending on the clause chosen
- Loading and unloading, where that extension is taken
- Strike, riot and civil commotion, where those clauses are added
Cover options
- A specific transit policy for one consignment
- An open policy or annual turnover policy covering every declared despatch
- Inland Transit (Rail or Road) Clauses A or B, which set how wide the cover is
- Extensions for loading and unloading, and for strike, riot and civil commotion
- Cover for machinery being shifted between your own locations
- Sum insured on invoice value, or cost plus freight, as declared

Marine transit insurance: FAQs
How is this different from marine cargo insurance?
It is the same idea applied to journeys within India. International shipments use the Institute Clauses; inland movements use the Inland Transit Clauses, and the documents and claim process differ.
Is theft covered?
It depends on the clause chosen. The wider clause covers theft, pilferage and non-delivery; the narrower one responds to a listed set of events only. Choose against the goods you actually move.
Can one policy cover all my despatches?
Yes. An open or annual turnover policy covers every despatch you declare, so nothing moves uninsured and you are not arranging cover consignment by consignment.
What does a transit claim need?
Usually the invoice, the lorry or railway receipt, the packing list, a shortage or damage certificate from the carrier, and your claim on the transporter: [DOCUMENT LIST] confirms what your insurer asks for.
