Two-wheeler insurance
Cover for your bike or scooter: the third-party liability the law requires, plus optional own-damage protection against accident, theft, fire and natural calamities.
What it covers
Cover varies between insurers and plans. The policy wording is what decides whether a claim is payable, so read it before you buy.
- Third-party liability for injury, death or property damage you cause to someone else
- Accidental damage to your own bike or scooter, under a comprehensive or own-damage policy
- Fire, explosion, self-ignition and lightning
- Theft of the insured two-wheeler
- Natural calamities such as flood, storm, cyclone and earthquake
- Riot, strike, malicious acts and damage while the vehicle is in transit
- Compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver, where it applies
Cover options
- Third-party only: the statutory minimum, covering your liability to other people
- Own damage only: taken alongside an existing long-term third-party policy
- Comprehensive: own damage and third-party liability in a single policy
- Add-ons offered by some insurers, such as zero depreciation, roadside assistance, engine protection and consumables cover
- Insured Declared Value chosen within the band the insurer allows: [IDV RANGE]

Two-wheeler insurance: FAQs
Is two-wheeler insurance mandatory in India?
Yes. Third-party motor cover is required by law for every vehicle used on a public road in India. Own-damage cover and add-ons are optional, but they are the part that pays for damage to your own bike.
What is No Claim Bonus on a two-wheeler policy?
A discount on the own-damage part of your premium for each claim-free year. It belongs to you rather than to the bike, so you can carry it to a new insurer or a new two-wheeler at renewal.
My policy has expired. Can I still renew it?
Yes, but the insurer will usually ask to inspect the bike before cover restarts, and a No Claim Bonus can be lost if the policy has been lapsed too long. Cover applies only from the new start date, so avoid riding until the policy is issued.
What decides the premium?
Premiums start from [PREMIUM FROM] and depend on the make, model, engine capacity, the age of the bike, your city, the cover you choose and your No Claim Bonus. Third-party rates are notified by IRDAI; own-damage rates are set by each insurer.
