Personal accident insurance
Cover for the financial effect of an accident: a benefit on accidental death, and on the permanent or temporary disability that stops you working.
What it covers
Cover varies between insurers and plans. The policy wording is what decides whether a claim is payable, so read it before you buy.
- Accidental death benefit paid to your nominee
- Permanent total disability, paid as a share of the sum insured per the policy's table
- Permanent partial disability, on the scale set out in the policy
- Temporary total disability, paid as a weekly benefit while you cannot work, where included
- Optional benefits such as hospital cash, ambulance, broken bones, children's education support and funeral expenses, depending on the plan
Key features
- A benefit policy: the amount is fixed by the policy, not by your bills
- Sum insured usually linked to your annual income: [SUM INSURED RANGE]
- Cover applies worldwide, around the clock, on most plans
- Premium depends mainly on occupation risk class rather than on age or medical history
- Available as an individual policy, a family cover, or group personal accident for employees
- Entry and exit ages set by the insurer: [AGE LIMITS]

Personal accident insurance: FAQs
How is this different from health or life insurance?
Health insurance pays hospital bills; life insurance pays on death from any covered cause. A personal accident policy pays a fixed benefit for accidental death and for disability, which is the risk other policies cover least.
Is illness covered?
No. Only accidents, as the policy defines them. Death or disability from illness is not a personal accident claim.
What is usually excluded?
Self-inflicted injury and suicide, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hazardous activities unless declared, war, and, on many plans, childbirth and any disability that existed before the policy.
Do I already have this cover?
Motor policies include a compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver, and employers often provide group personal accident cover. Both are usually smaller than an individual policy, and both end with the vehicle or the job.
