Travel insurance

Cover for what can go wrong on a trip: emergency medical treatment away from home, a cancelled or delayed journey, lost baggage and a lost passport, for the days you are travelling.

What it covers

Cover varies between insurers and plans. The policy wording is what decides whether a claim is payable, so read it before you buy.

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation while travelling, cashless where the insurer's network allows
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation, curtailment or interruption for the reasons the policy lists
  • Flight delay, missed connection and trip delay benefits
  • Loss of checked-in baggage, baggage delay and loss of passport
  • Personal liability while travelling, and personal accident during the trip

Cover options

  • Single-trip cover for one journey, or multi-trip cover for a year of travel
  • Individual, family, senior and student plans, and corporate travel for staff
  • Visa-compliant plans where a country requires insurance meeting specific conditions
  • Trip length limits per journey: [TRIP LENGTH LIMITS]
  • Geographical scope you choose, which changes the premium: [GEOGRAPHICAL LIMITS]
  • A deductible on medical claims under many plans: [DEDUCTIBLE]

Travel insurance: FAQs

When should I buy travel insurance?

As soon as the trip is booked. Cancellation cover only responds to events after the policy starts, and many visa applications require the policy before the appointment.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Usually only life-threatening emergencies arising from them, if at all, and always as the wording defines. Declare conditions in the proposal and ask for the terms in writing.

Will it cover a trip I cancel because my plans changed?

No. Cancellation is payable only for the reasons the policy lists, such as illness, injury or specific named events. A change of mind is not one of them.

Is travel inside India covered?

There are domestic travel plans covering delay, baggage, accident and hospitalisation within India. Most travel insurance, though, is bought for international trips, where medical costs are the main risk.

My credit card includes travel cover. Is that enough?

Card cover can be limited in the sum insured, in which trips qualify and in what it pays for. Compare its wording against a standalone policy before you rely on it.
