Home insurance
Cover for your home and what is in it: the structure against fire, flood, storm and other perils, and contents, appliances and valuables against damage or theft.
What it covers
Cover varies between insurers and plans. The policy wording is what decides whether a claim is payable, so read it before you buy.
- The structure of the house or flat against fire, lightning, explosion, storm, flood and impact damage
- Household contents, furniture and appliances against the same perils
- Burglary, theft and attempted theft of contents
- Portable electronics and jewellery, where declared, on an all-risk basis
- Alternative accommodation or loss of rent while the home cannot be lived in, where included
- Public liability, and cover for domestic staff on some plans
Key features
- Structure and contents can be insured together or separately; tenants usually insure contents only
- The structure sum insured is based on built-up area and construction cost, not on the market price of the property
- Bharat Griha Raksha, the standard home insurance product for India, carries a common wording across general insurers
- Long-term policy terms are offered by many insurers: [POLICY TERM OPTIONS]
- Valuables usually have to be listed, and high-value items may need a valuation
- Land value is never insured

Home insurance: FAQs
My society already insures the building. Do I need my own policy?
A society policy usually covers the structure and common areas only, and often not your contents, interiors or valuables. Those are on you.
How do I decide the sum insured on the structure?
On the cost of rebuilding: the built-up area multiplied by the current construction rate in your area. The land, and the market price of the flat, are not part of it.
Is jewellery covered?
Only where it is included, usually as a declared item or under an all-risk section, sometimes with a valuation and a condition about where it is kept. Check the wording before relying on it.
What about rain and flood damage?
Storm, cyclone, flood and inundation are covered perils on standard home insurance. Damage from seepage, poor maintenance or wear and tear is not.
