Tell us your goal and we shortlist funds for you

This is not a fund screener. We do not publish return tables, rankings or star ratings, because a list sorted by last year's numbers is the worst way to pick something you will hold for ten. Tell us what the money is for and we put a short, explained list in front of you.

How we compare funds

We start with what you need: the goal, the horizon, and how much of a fall in value you could sit through without selling. That decides the category before any scheme is named.

Within a category, we look at what the scheme is mandated to do, how it is run, what it costs you, and what getting out would involve: the lock-in, the exit load and the tax treatment. Then we hand you the scheme documents and go through them with you.

What we will not do is tell you which fund will perform best, or show you a leaderboard. Nobody knows the first, and the second reliably points people at whatever has just had a good run.

Who this is for

  • Anyone facing a long list of funds with no idea how to narrow it
  • People holding several funds that overlap, who want to know what they actually own
  • Investors moving from fixed deposits and unsure where to start
  • Anyone who has been sent a "top fund" list and wants a second opinion

General guidance, not a recommendation for your situation. What fits depends on your goal, your income and how much risk you can carry.

What we look at, and what we ignore

The shortlist we give you is built on these, in this order.

  • Your goal and horizon

What the money is for and when you need it. This does more to decide the answer than anything about the fund.

  • How much of a fall you can live with

Said in rupees, not in words like "moderate". A plan you abandon in a bad year was the wrong plan.

  • The category, then the scheme

Equity, debt, hybrid or index, and within that the sub-category. Two funds in different categories are not comparable at all.

  • What the scheme is mandated to do

Read from the scheme information document: where it can invest, what it cannot hold, and how concentrated it is allowed to be.

  • Cost, lock-in and exit terms

What the scheme charges, whether a lock-in applies and what an early exit would cost you.

  • What you already hold

Adding a fifth fund that holds the same companies as the other four adds nothing. Overlap is one of the most common problems we see.

  • Not: last year's return

We do not sort by past performance, publish ranking tables or repeat star ratings. Past performance does not tell you what happens next.

Get a shortlist for your goal

Tell us what the money is for and what you already hold. We come back with a short list, the scheme documents, and the reasons each one is on it.

Optional. Monthly or one-time, whichever you mean.
The more you tell us here, the shorter and more useful the list will be.

Common questions

Why is there no fund comparison table on this page?

Because a table of past returns is not a comparison, it is a ranking of what has already happened. We would rather ask what your money is for and explain a short list you can actually understand.

How many funds do I actually need?

Usually far fewer than people hold. Several funds in the same category often own many of the same companies, which adds paperwork without adding spread. We look at overlap before we suggest adding anything.

Will you tell me which fund is the best?

No. We will tell you which funds fit the goal you described, why each one is on the list, and what the risks are. Anyone promising you the best fund is guessing.

Can you look at the funds I already hold?

Yes. Send us a statement and we will go through what you own, where it overlaps and whether it still matches what you are trying to do. There is no charge for that.

Does a comparison cost anything?

No. You pay us nothing directly; if you invest through us, the fund house pays a commission out of the scheme, which is disclosed in the scheme documents.
